Social Media Engagement

Social media has far surpassed the fad stage. It’s here to stay, and whether you embrace it or fend it off, you and your customers will be impacted. There is a world of conversation and engagement that’s happening right now – with or without you. The good news? The ability to jump in and engage is available at your fingertips. If you haven’t yet, it’s time to jump in! What is Social Media Engagement? Social Media engagement is related to participation in collective activities while using digital media, which reinforces social capital and social norms. Key elements of social engagement include activity (doing something), interaction (at least two people need to be involved in this activity), social exchange (the activity involves giving or receiving something from others), and lack of compulsion (there is no outside force forcing an individual to engage in the activity). For the most part, social media engagement excludes activities for which one is getting paid, or family obligations. A common metric of social media engagement is the quantifiable volume of activity. A traditional form of social engagement, such as watching a sport, may be measured by the number of visitors to a game. In the Internet setting a metric of social engagement on a discussion may take the form of the number of posts made. One of the main topics in studying social engagement by social scientists has related to whether individuals are more or less engaged with various communities. Some studies have suggested that modern information and communication technologies have made it easier for individuals to become socially engaged in more distant or virtual communities, and thus have decreased their involvement in local communities. How to Engage with your Audience? If you want your brand’s social media efforts to come across as authentic, you need to know what you stand for and what’s meaningful to you. The Importance of #Hashtags

Recently Facebook announced that it is implementing #hashtags to manage topics on the growing social network . #hashtags are not a new “trend” on the web, they appeared long ago on IRC to help manage chat groups. In 2007, Chris Messina suggesting that they  used #hashtags on twitter to help trend topics. Now they are more commonly seen and used by twitter, facebook, instagrams and other social networks. What is a #Hashtag? A hashtag is a word or a phrase prefixed with the symbol. It is a form of metadata tag. Short messages on microblogging social networking services such as Twitter, Tout, identi.ca, Tumblr, Instagram, Flickr, Google+ or Facebook may be tagged by putting “#” before important words, as in: #Wikipedia is an #encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Hashtags provide a means of grouping such messages, since one can search for the hashtag and get the set of messages that contain it. Using #Hashtags on Facebook. Hashtags turn topics and phrases into clickable links in your posts on your personal timeline or Page. This helps people find posts about topics they’re interested in. To make a hashtag, write # (the number sign) along with a topic or phrase (written as one word) and add it to your post. For example: I walked up so many hills today! #SanFrancisco When you click a hashtag, you’ll see a feed of posts that include that hashtag. You’ll also see some related hashtags at the top. You can search for a hashtag using the search bar at the top of any page. How are #Hashtags used? Hashtags are mostly used as unmoderated ad-hoc discussion forums; any combination of characters led by a hash symbol is a hashtag, and any hashtag, if promoted by enough individuals, can “trend” and attract more individual users to discussion using the hashtag. On Twitter, when a hashtag becomes extremely popular, it will appear in the “Trending Topics” area of a user’s homepage. The trending topics can be organized by geographic area or by all of Twitter. Hashtags are neither registered nor controlled by any one user or group of users, and neither can they be “retired” from public usage, meaning that hashtags can be used in theoretical perpetuity depending upon the longevity of the word or set of characters in a written language. They also do not contain any set definitions, meaning that a single hashtag can be used for...

Blogging 101

Blogging and Content Management in Bali – Social Media and Brand Management What is a blog? A blog (a contraction of the words web log)[1] is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries (“posts”) typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first). Until 2009 blogs were usually the work of a single individual, occasionally of a small group, and often covered a single subject. More recently “multi-author blogs” (MABs) have developed, with posts written by large numbers of authors and professionally edited. MABs from newspapers, other media outlets, universities, think tanks, interest groups and similar institutions account for an increasing quantity of blog traffic. The rise of Twitter and other “microblogging” systems helps integrate MABs and single-author blogs into societal newstreams. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. Blogging 101 in Bali SEO and Web Marketing Solutions in Indonesia Emergence of blogs and online publishing in Bali The emergence and growth of blogs in the late 1990s coincided with the advent of web publishing tools that facilitated the posting of content by non-technical users. (Previously, a knowledge of such technologies as HTML and FTP had been required to publish content on the Web.) A majority are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via GUI widgets on the blogs, and it is this interactivity that distinguishes them from other static websites. In that sense, blogging can be seen as a form of social networking. Indeed, bloggers do not only produce content to post on their blogs, but also build social relations with their readers and other bloggers. There are high-readership blogs which do not allow comments, such as Daring Fireball. Many blogs provide commentary on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries; others function more as online brand advertising of a particular individual or company. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important contribution to the popularity of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (art blogs), photographs (photoblogs), videos (video blogs or “vlogs”), music (MP3 blogs), and audio (podcasts). Microblogging is another type of blogging, featuring very...
